I have never paid for any of the 61s, 82s, 2000s 1st Grwoth I possess at home; they were all given to me as gifts. Come to think of it, more than 90% of the 100 odd bottles of Bordeaux were presents and most of them were 1st growths. I seldom buy Bordeaux these days as much better value wines could be found in other French Regions, Italy and Australia.
A Selossse Champagne might cost HK$2000, but that' s better value and much rarer than a Latiur. Same for a Chave Hermitage or a Arnoux Romanee St Vivant, or a Confuon. RSV or a Mugnier Musigny ( now Burgundy is getting unreasonably expensive). For something around 2-3 thousand, I much prefer a quintarelli or Dal Forno Amarone, a Rayas, a jäger-Gilles Echezeaux, to a high scoring Parkerised Bordeaux from a so called great vintage. Besides, the so called off-vintages in Bordeaux, like 1991,1981 and 1994, you can buy great wines at good prices from other regions. I still have fond memories of my 91 Jean Gros Richebourg (paid 60), 81 Rayas(£50), and 94 Chanve Hermitage (£54).
Bordeaux Blannc were once good value,esp in the off vintages for red, like 92, 94, 2001. But now a 2009 La Mission Haut Brion Blanc, which is far from ready to drink, cost more than a 98 Laville Haut Brion (£7000+. vs £1000+). Isn' t this ridiculous to rush for these so-called great vintages and compete with our Mainland rich bros who love these trophy wines and will get them at all cost? |
