Not mean to be boasting, I have had numerous vintages of Grange starting from the 72. The latest Grange I had was the 91 in July 2014--I have always liked the 91 as it was not heralded as a great vintage, hence the price was more reasonable. It had the usual Grange attack, with suffused blue/black fruit and the moreish finish of plums and prunes and lavender. Elegant it was not, but somehow it was less brutal than the standard Grange. The 82 was similar, when I had it around 10 years ago; I liked it for its perfume and mouthfill. You need time for Grange; I find the American oak in young Granges can be a tad obtrusive, but with 20+ years of age, this tends to subside and blends well with the fruit.
The 82 Hill Of Grace was quite a different animal: one could use the term elegant for it, something very unusual about Aussie shiraz. In fact when I visited the winery in early 2000s and related my previous experience of the 82 to the owner, she quite agreed with me the 82 was very different from the others and that they liked it very much themselves. Of course the usual H of G is much darker/purpler and fuller (the 82 was ruby). Try the 90 (paid Aus$250 back then) and you will see what I mean. |
