It is truly an excellent story! I believe your experience is TRUE! However, it still can be explained scientifically; as you have stated the forest is indeed a magnet mine. Therefore, your brain subjected to variable magnetic field strength and possibly pulse too; this might lead to the illusion you guys experienced!

Oh, I thought it is your experience! hehe..
Don't worry, this story has raised my desire to go there! Probably I would bring a gauss gage and inductor together with oscilloscope! hehe... Mapping that field strength/pulse would be fun and I might not come back then! hehehe...
